Role

Product Designer, Design Lead

Overview

CALM (Common Architecture Language Model) is an open source, architecture as code project run by a volunteer group of developers with no UX funding.

Scope and timeframe

I was brought in to guide the team through UX exercises to ultimately provide the team with wireframes and UI support all within 1 month.

Stakeholders

Dev leadership on the CALM team, COE Department Head of the UX Design team.

Gathering needs

The project was driven by a group back end developers and one product owner, and no UX or UI work had been completed before I joined the project.

Because of the tight timeframe and lack of UX funding, we had to work quickly.

The team of developers were focused on building the tool but were building without a clear picture of users and the larger UX picture.

Rapid UX process

Defining product goals, user types, and outlining journeys

I started with an exercise to identify the problems that they are solving and to understand the high level user types.

Once high level user types were defined, we began roughly mapping the journey focusing domain architects.

Wireframes

Wireframes were the final deliverable for this project.

Even with the tight timeline and spending more time than expected on understanding the users and journeys, I was able to provide a set of wireframes for the developers to work from as a starting point for the product.
